The 911: Its History, and Evolution

Ferdinand Porsche, a man contributing heavily to the creation of the Volkswagen Beatle, and his son Ferry, created the Porsche 356 with a rounded body and a flat-four air-cooled engine situated in the rear, resulting in the rear-engine layout. Successive years resulted in advancements such as a straight-six cylinder engine and rear seats, ultimately leading to the creation of the Porsche 911 in 1963. Following the release, drivers worldwide found themselves lusting after the precision handling and exception power packed within the nimble sportscar. Further expanding the success of the 911, models such as the Targa (a convertible-like variant with a structural roll bar for added safety) were added, in addition to performance-oriented variants such as the Carrera, S, T, GTS, RS, GT3 and GT2 Series over successive decades.

Modern Porsche 911--Diverse Performance Icons

With a range of performance levels between models, the 911 offers models that range from an already-exceptional 370 horsepower base model Carrera, yielding a 4.4 second zero to sixty acceleration, to a 700 horsepower behemoth with a 2.7 second zero to sixty acceleration with the GT2 RS. With drivetrains offering either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive options and a luxurious yet sport-inspired interior, the Porsche 911 delivers performance and style in droves. Additionally, should the alluring exhaust note ever become a sound you wish to drown out, an optional BOSE® Surround Sound System specially tuned for the 911 delivers audiophile-level quality for optimal entertainment.
